So for the first time in his life, he found himself in a supportive and accepting environment. You would think that his problems were over, but unfortunately, the trauma had lasting effects. Though people treated him with kindness, he disregarded it as superficial. It was not enough to remove him from his abusive environment; the emotional and psychological wounds were still open and bleeding. And while surface kindness and respect do no harm, neither can they heal. No one could convince him that he was either understood or lovable, and this belief caused him to perpetuate the environment of pain that was the only world he could conceive of.
